Harthorn has always had a small problem. That problem? Stray dogs. To fix this, a research company known as Kilco Labs set up a research facility on the outskirts of Harthorn and began using stray dogs from the pound as their test subjects. Everything was tested from hair products and drugs to various feeds and vitamin combinations. A division of the lab even invested time in trying to make the dogs better, so they could go longer without food or had better night vision to help them survive. The dogs were often heavily drugged and many that escaped described the place as hell but at the time, the humans thought they were helping everyone by making the dogs smarter and better adapted while still getting rid of the stray problem. Over time the lab even began adopting out their "successes" when they felt the dogs were too old.
Owners of these dogs quickly found their canine companions were acting strangely. They slept during the day, shied from strong sunlight, or sometimes refused to eat anything other than raw meat. Panic truly struck when one dog in particular scratched his human. The boy died three hours later of poisoning. The dog was captured and analyzed only to find he had developed poison glands and the poison was held in his claws which had been hollowed out like the fangs of a snake.
Troubled by this discovery, Kilco Labs began testing their other dogs for such mutations. Each dog was different and some had no symptoms at all of mutations, or at least none that were visible. Slowly though, the dogs became more aware and the drugs used to keep them down became ineffective. The dogs were smart enough however, to "play dead" until they saw the chance to escape. One by one the dogs began to escape the lab, some seeming to just vanish from the tables and kennels while others mauled the scientists to gain their freedom.
Hystaria broke out in the town and for five years the town was in fear of "demon dogs". To kill the hysteria, Kilco Labs went underground with their research to avoid government attention. Spokespeople claimed the dogs were merely rabid and were to be avoided as they were being rounded up and put down. Slowly the people began to forget the demon dogs but, they still lived and Kilco Labs, abandoned to the knowledge of the townsfolk, continued to function.
Normal strays referred to the lab dogs as Daemon dogs and most are weary of them since some can be possessed by great madness. The Demeron Pack was established as a refuge for escaped dogs but are often drawn into fighting amongst themselves and other packs. For now the peace is unsteady and no one knows how long it will last.
